isn't it odd, Blogger?

One should never say this aloud
but, very occasionally, I unfollow blogs.

You know the way you'd see an interesting post
about someone painting their stable door pink
and on a mad impulse you'd click 'Follow,'
only to find as the weeks draw on that the stable door was a once off
and that every single other post is about their cat.

[proud of my new window-box]

Or worse,
when the volume is turned up on your computer
you realise that a country song plays whenever their blog opens,
the sort of country song that makes people go soft in the head.

[still proud of it from a different angle]

The thing is, though, that it's never actually possible to Unfollow.
Unsubscribe. Are You Sure You Really Want To?
Yes, Damn You
and you think the thing is defeated,
but no:

Every few weeks, the whole lot of them, every blog I've ever unfollowed,
shows up in my Google Reader,
a veritable vista of cats
with that soft stuff about love and the hard times
playing in the background.

How the cat people and the country music people will hate me now,
and rightly so,
but they'll never be able to fully Unfollow me.
Never.

  1. Oh dear. Now we're all afraid that you read us only because you have to. Ho-hum, in the wise words of Great Uncle Bulgaria... Now we're all stuck together in a huge mass of virtual buttercream icing. There's something very Cloud Atlas about that thought.

    1. It is comments like this one of yours, Mags, that keep me going along the weary road.

  2. Hi, I have to agree with you, I unfollow and follow but I never had those blogs return back to my list, the ones I do want to read sometimes don't show anymore...weird right?
I made a post last year about this whole follow me or not thing, lost some numbers but in the end it's best to stay true to yourself.
    Enjoy the weekend,
    Maureen

  3. Not had that problem -I unfollow at will and never do they return to haunt me.

  4. By the way Mise I am very pleased you don't have that word verification nonsense in your comment box. Blogger seems to have made it unaccountably difficult to do, particularly after a few damson gins.

    1. Some valuable research over at my place has pinpointed the very same issue after drinking normal gin, Sue.

  5. And that was possibly my last guffaw of the day before midnight strikes.... unless I re-read your post very quickly that is.

Yes, Sue; will Blogger be asking us to write a verification essay next? What's with the two words in hyroglifics we have to dutifully type out now?

  6. I was going to look at my followers list to see if you were still there, but then I would have to go through all the little icons of which there are over 450. Since I only have a dozen or so real followers, that Follower Thingey is really not a true gauge...

    1. I'm there, Chania, sure as cushions. I've taken to following blogs anonymously lately so as not to have my little picture all over the place, but my membership at your place predates my anonymity.

  7. Bloody hell. Hang on a minute while I brush the cat fur off the sofa and turn off the John Denver CD :)

  8. Too funny Mise. It's good to know we will haunt you and be haunted back. That's probably as spiritual as I dare to be on blogger. xx

  9. I guess you haven't had a minute to return and compliment yourself on your window box so let me be the first:

Your window box is a thing of beauty and a joy for the spring.

Huh, try and unfollow me now will you. Anyway, am I not your BFF?

  10. What's going to happen when Blogger stops the Followers thingy?? [which others tell me is very imminent] Will we all have a clean sheet so we can start again with a clear conscience, and avoid the Tammy Wynette playing, Siamese Kitten lovers?
I dream of dignified domesticity but sadly I have some of Mags' buttercream icing on my nose. I usually cross off a lot of the blogs on my blogroll in US Election Year. Is that a terrible thing to admit?

    1. Oh really, Angela? I'll be glad to see the end of that thing. It only encourages the mad dance of the mass subscribers. Isn't Mags wonderful?

  11. I've never un-followed anyone Mise .... and can I just point out that you've left your trowel in your window box !! I must be off now as I have to go and polish my minature thimble collection ...you can probably hear Val Doonican playing in the background !! XXXX

  12. Coveting your window box--jonquils and primroses are so pretty and cheerful and confident.

Please feel free to complain in your warm and witty way about the "Prove you are not a robot" comment challenge. It is now two words, each in a different annoying blurry font. I would do it but I'm a coward, and people will follow you anywhere.

  13. I unfollow at will...everything has its comings and goings, shifts and phases... Your posts always promise a laugh or two, though, so I haven't hung up on you...you'll probably unfollow me before I unfollow you :)

  14. Yes! Drives me nuts! Always there floating around. I finally made a Google Reader folder for them ("Regrettable") so I can just mark them all read at once.

    p.s. will never unfollow you.

p.s.s. and not just because I can't anyway.

    1. Oh, hurrah, it's not just me so. Regrettable is a great idea. I shall never unfollow you then and we will have a Pact. My first Pact ever, in fact: I clearly haven't lived.

  15. At a guess, this has to do with the upcoming end-of-life for the Google Friend Connect functionality:). Also you have to unfollow them from Blogger. You can't unfollow them from Reader the regular way.

  16. I've actually been confronted after unfollowing. Very uncomfortable...

  19. Hello Mise

Spring seems to have sprung at Pretty Far West. I love your new window box and your selection of plants and colours is most cheerful. Spring is a time to plant and also a good time to pluck weeds.
Your blog will always blossom on my blog roll

  20. How does one get country music to play on ones blog?

    2. A fine choice, Mise. I shall choose something from here, It will save time to combine the country music and the cats. Leaving me more time to blog, as so far I have only one post with my cat in it. This will clearly have to change.

  21. I have never tried to unfollow anyone....I have to admit I do delete the email if I don't have the time to visit.

There is part of the problem, blog-land has grown so much and I love to leave comments; however the verification horrorglyphics is the worst thing ever. I have to click the refresh 5 or 6 times to find words I can barely read! What a pain!

  22. Google Reader makes it nearly impossible to unfollow. I made the mistake of following a highly produced career blog that pushes thin/uninteresting posts about 12 times a day. I have to unsubscribe every other day. I can't shake it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. And my cat sometimes even helps write the posts! Well, sort of, she supervises me. I need supervision!

And now I can look forward to those I've unfollowed coming back to stalk me! emmmm

  24. I love your window box too but I don't seem to have your problem. When I have had to unfollow, it has worked very well for me. Perhaps you are linked via multiple venues? Anyhow, good luck with your unfollowing! And I am glad you are not following me because every post IS about my cats. : )

  25. i'd never EVER unfollow you, in fact i'm keeping all options open by following subscribing and sending myself daily messages and texts that link to PFW.
i hate to say this out loud but you must be doing something wrong . i've never had unfollowed blogs haunt me ?
your lucky it was just a cat , i had to see someones' eye infection.
your window boxes are the epitome of joy

  26. Mise, in Google reader, it is possible to delete blogs that you no longer want to follow, from your reading list. I hope that many more people will stop the wretched WV thing.

Love your window box, very cheery.

  27. Lucky you have posted such a fetching window box to distract me whilst reading this post about follow/unfollow. I feel quite paralysed by etiquette in this area and have decided to never unfollow anyone unless they make derogatory comments about people who love soft furnishings. The perfect background music would of course be, "Follow You, Follow Me" by Phil Collins. Or "The day my wife met my girlfriend". Whatever.

Much love to you, o wise weather barometer of the blogosphere. What's your forecast for this week?

  28. Ooh I'm with you girl, country music - I hate it!! And blogs that blind me with some lace doily sort of background & blogs that are SO busy with SO much stuff I have to seek help from my Therapist to de-stress myself after spending 30 mins trying to get out of the maze on their Home page. I was thinking of giving The Hedge a mini makeover, 'cos I think it's a bit too simple & unsophisticated. I'm not going to now as I would be devastated to be Unfollowed by the Queen of Irish Bloggers.

  29. I am with you on the music... I always wander off those sites. The snow is bothersome, adds are a huge no-no and sometimes, just to be spiteful, when I get to the end of a post and realise it is one of those 'paid for promos' .... Then I cut loose. I like up front disclosure. I am hopeful it is not I you have unfollowed Mise, Although, it might be warranted....

  30. Google Reader really needs to fix the "unfollow" problem. I have tried everything, but those blogs I don't want to read are impossible to get rid of. Perhaps, I'll just follow blogs in my email from now on. Nice blog!

    ReplyDelete
  31. That IS a very nice window box. Great post too.

I have solved the whole follow thing irrevocably. I click 'follow' for every blog I ever visit. That, as you can imagine, is quite a lot of people.

But on my Mac I have an inner circle: a cyber-round-table, if you will (although I won't be offended if you won't). Macs do a lovely riffle-stack to record favourite web pages and I can riffle through my great blogging friends at the touch of a mouse.

Meanwhile, back at the Wordpress Ranch, they're wondering who this crazy follow-everyone-woman is.

  32. Ugh- Don't get me started on musical blogs- Such an invasion of privacy and personal taste-

I totally agree about the unfollowing and the fact that it is impossible-
